King Hussain

Royal family King Hussein bin Talal (1935-1999) His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal, the father of modern Jordan, will always be remembered as a leader who guided his country through strife and turmoil to become an oasis of peace, stability and moderation in the Middle East. Among Jordanians, his memory is cherished as the inspiration for Jordan's climate of openness, tolerance and compassion. Known to his people as Al-Malik Al-Insan ("The Humane King"), King Hussein established a legacy which promises to guide Jordan for many years to come. At the time of his passing on February 7, 1999, His Majesty was the longest serving executive head of state in the world. Of great significance to Muslims throughout the world, the late King Hussein was also the forty-second generation direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. He was born in Amman on November 14, 1935, to Prince Talal bin Abdullah and Princess Zein al-Sharaf bint Jamil. Two brothers, Prince Muhammad and Prince El Hassan, and one sister, Princess Basma, survive King Hussein. After completing his elementary education in Amman, His Majesty attended Victoria College in Alexandria, Egypt, and Harrow School in England. He later received his military education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. Early in young Hussein's life, and on July 20, 1951, his grandfather King Abdullah was martyred at al-Aqsa mosque in al-Quds (Jerusalem). Hussein was there, with his grandfather, as they went regularly to perform Friday prayers. A medal King Abdullah had recently given the young Prince Hussein, and which he wore after his grandfather's insistence, saved Hussein from the assassin's bullet.

King Abdullah II is the 43rd generation direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. He assumed his constitutional powers as King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on February 7th, 1999, the day his father, the late King Hussein, passed away. Born in Amman on Tuesday, January 30th, 1962, King Abdullah is the eldest son to the Late King Hussein and HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein. His Majesty began his primary education at the Islamic Educational College, a private Arab school in Amman in 1966 and later St. Edmund's School in Surrey England. For his Secondary education, he attended Eaglebrook School and Deerfield Academy in the United States of America. Throughout his school years, he was assigned a private tutor for Arabic and Islamic Studies. For school vacations, King Abdullah returned to Jordan and spent the holidays with his Jordanian school mates and friends, and was always involved in his Father's activities thus preparing him for future responsibilities As part of his training as a Jordanian officer, King Abdullah II joined the Royal Military Academy Sand Hurst in the United Kingdom in 1980, where he received his military education and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1981. He was later appointed as a Reconnaissance Troop Leader in the 13th/18th Battalion of the Royal Hussars (British Army) in, the then, West Germany and England. In 1982 King Abdullah II attended Oxford University, undergoing a one-year Special Studies course in Middle Eastern Affairs. Upon returning home, King Abdullah, a First Lieutenant joined the Jordanian Armed Forces and served as Platoon Commander and Company 2nd-in-Command in the 40th Armored Brigade in the Jordanian Armed Forces where he lived and worked with ordinary Jordanian soldiers. He also joined a Parachute and Freefall course. In 1985 he attended the Armored Officers Advanced Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, USA. In 1986 he was Commander of a Tank Company in the 91st Armored Brigade of the Jordanian Armed Forces holding the rank of Captain. He also served with the Royal Jordanian Air force Anti-Tank Wing where he received his wings as well as his qualifications as a Cobra Attack Pilot. In 1987, King Abdullah II attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and was in residence there as a Mid-Career Fellow. He undertook Advanced Study and Research in International Affairs under the auspices of the Master of Science in Foreign Service Program. Upon his return to Jordan, King Abdullah II resumed his military career where he held various positions among them Commander of the Royal Jordanian Special Forces and Special Operations Commander.

Obtained a bachelors in Buisness and Administration from the American University in Cairo. Also took child psychology courses at the American University in Cairo. Careers: Had a career in the private sector of banking and a brief one in the field of information technology. Marriage: Married to Prince Abdullah (now King Abdullah II) on June 10, 1993. Children: Prince Hussein (June 28, 1994) and Princess Iman (September 27, 1996). Charities: Queen Rania is active in many charities and causes such as child abuse awareness. She is also the founder of the Jordan River Foundation and the president of the Jordan Society for Organ Donation. Likes: Reading, water skiing, running, cycling, cooking, hanging out at Amman's first Internet cafe and riding with King Abdullah on his Harley-Davidson. Other Interesting facts: She speaks Arabic and English fluently. She's very close to BOTH of her mother-in-laws, Princess Muna and Queen Noor.
